Research subject for a potential FP6 project

Proposal abstract:
Castanea sativa Mill. and species of Quercus, Rhododendron and Skimmia as well as other ornamental woody plants in all areas of their cultivation have been threatened by parasitic fungi. Out of them the most dangerous are fungi from genera Cryphonectria and Phytophtora.The most effective and most ecological control of these diseases seem to be the biological control based on the phenomenon of hypovirulence and utilisation of antagonistic microorganisms. Testing these methods on plants attacked with fungal diseases will bring useful knowledge for their control.

Objectives:
  • To evaluate health condition of European chestnut and oaks on territory of Slovakia with regard to occurrence of Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr.
  • To collect as many as possible number of hypovirulent isolates of Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr. And produce from them commercial preparations suitable for treatment of cankers.
  • To test antagonistic micro-organisms for liquidation of fungi of Phytophtora spp. on selected woody species
