Research subject for a potential FP6 project

Because lead and lead containing chemicals are hazardous to human life and environment we propose the development of lead-free solder materials along with the basic scientific research on various properties of these materials, their practical application and their durability during actual use in all kinds of equipments in order to replace the currently used lead-containing solders in the future. The main attention will be paid to joining of materials with considerably different physical properties especially, thermal expansion and thermal conductivity (e.g. metal-ceramic, metallic composite-ceramic, metallic composite-ceramic composite). Traditional lead containing solders will be replaced by newly developed advanced materials such as functionally graded materials, brazes containing particles or short fibres, complex solders prepared from immiscible metals by rapid solidification etc.
The considerable experience in this research subject was gained in the outrunning BRITE-EURAM No3876 project that had been directed towards the development of joining technique of CuC composite to alumna ceramic plate.
